Baryte pirce Would see Q4 again
Weather havoc could leave supply tight, as demand firms for drilling applications
Bad weather in China and India, two of the world’s most important sources of barytes, could leave the drilling material in short supply in the next two to three months.
“This at a time when demand is increasing,” a market source said to IM.
Chinese suppliers have been hit by two back-to back major floods, which disrupted transport links to the ports. This means that there is little material at the portside available for immediate shipment.
Droughts had affected barytes supply in March and April earlier this year in parts of south-west China, which not only left millions of the region’s residents without water supply, but also severely limited the amount of water available for mining and farming.
Areas hardest hit included the barytes producing provinces of Yunan, Guizhou and Sichuan, and the region of Guangxi.
Monsoon hits Indian mine
The vast majority of Indian barytes production is sourced from one of the world’s largest deposits in Andhra Pradesh, which accounts for most of the country’s production.
Here heavy monsoon rains have flooded the bottom part of the mine, leaving only upper layers accessible.
This potentially means that there might be a shortage of the higher quality SG4.2 material required for drilling applications, which is at the flood level.
Production is ongoing of slightly lower density, SG 4.15, barytes, which is extracted from higher levels.
Prices for Chinese barytes are holding steady for the moment at $68-70/tonne, FOB China, for drilling grade, bulk, while Indian prices are in the $70-72/tonne range, bulk, FOB Chennai, India.
Moroccan barytes trucking costs
Meanwhile, prices for drilling grade barytes sourced from Morocco have been hiked as the introduction of a new Highway Code added €10/tonne to truck transport costs, according to an industry source.
The Highway Code was passed by the Morocco’s Chamber of Councillors on 5 January this year and came into effect at the beginning of October.
